There are opt-up variants to the "star quality" line that I assume is the issue here. Too bad they didn't consider that. (BTW - I'm still not convinced that it's really LuPone at the end of "Rainbow High" on the original Broadway recording. I think it sounds way too much like Mandy.)

Che is a tough role because he really does need to be a rock tenor with an easy top but he needs some trick low notes too (a low F in "Peron's Latest Flame"). Colm Wilkinson set the bar, for better or worse, for making range of the role to be so high on the original recording, with the riffing in "And The Money Kept Rolling In."

In this case, the actor playing Che (Alex Rodriguez, not the ballplayer) has won an award for the same role before, and among his other roles is the demanding and high-lying Quasimodo in Hunchback. So it sounds like he really should have the goods for the role. Perhaps he's been having some vocal trouble during this run? Hopefully he will get better.
