I would say that half of the price that is being asked right now still severely limits who can attend. That it is even worse now does not mean that it was ever OK. I remember Arthur Miller saying in, I think, the 1970s or possibly even the 1960s that ticket prices had gotten too high for the people who made his early plays hits. I tried recently looking for the quote, but I couldn't find it. What would he think now?

Closing performances have probably often attracted particular fans of a show going way back in time. (Some folks would say that the shows I mentioned in my earlier post were way back in time, and I suppose they were.) The degree of disruption by fans seems to have gotten worse and worse over time. If you've seen a show several times and you go to the last performance because you love that show, you're probably not too bothered by the disruptions, even if you don't respond quite so loudly yourself. Such performances are probably not a good time for people who've never seen a particular production to attend.

Of course, it depends on the show. You mention The Cher Show. As I recall it, there wasn't much disruption at the closing performance of the Robards-Dewhurst Moon for the Misbegotten. :) Just a warm standing ovation at the end at a time when standing ovations were pretty rare. Rare enough that I don't think there was one the first time I saw the production.
