Another mistake, musically speaking, in the Broadway production, was the new arrangement of "A Model of Decorum." It's a really wonderful quartet as originally written, with a true sense of an argument happening as the characters' lines overlap contrapuntally. On Broadway, they tried to make the lyrics clearer by taking out the counterpoint, which did make things clearer but ruined the musical fun. And then they added a bigger Broadway-ized ending, which ruined the compact, rather tense edge the original had. A complete miscalculation of the design of the song. |
