I was rewatching ''Always Mademoisielle,'' the ''Coco'' number from the 1970 Tonys. It's astonishing. Nowadays, you could never get away with a 15-minute segment devoted to one musical, and Katharine Hepburn doesn't even begin singing until 8 minutes in. The last 4 minutes basically consist of a fashion show of Coco Chanel, with the Tony-winning costumes of Cecil Beaton. The models climb a circular staircase, underscored by Andre Previn's beautiful music. | |
