| This was out of town during previews apparently. Chaplin did play the male lead in 3 of Jule Styne's shows, so Styne must have really liked him as a performer. Chaplin dated Holliday, though supposedly that didn't end well. Next, he starred opposite Carol Lawrence in "Subways Are For Sleeping" and according to reports, their dislike of each other off-stage rather was felt resulting in their lack of chemistry on-stage, helping to allow supporting performers Phyllis Newman and Orson Bean to steal the show. Finally, Chaplin co-starred as Nicky Arnstein opposite Streisand in "Funny Girl". In her recently released autobiography, she goes into previously unrevealed details about how after she ended her flirtation/(maybe) affair with Chaplin, he taunted her and called her names on-stage, under his breath within her hearing, and off-stage during the run until he finally left; she said that his treatment of her led to her stage fright and fear of performing in front of live audiences for many years. Yes, pictures show that he was pretty hot back in the day, so he did have an impact on his audiences and his leading ladies. |
