I think he used the unwed mothers, but it was a long time ago, and one's memory blurs. The production was enormously vulgar and unfunny. Here's something you might be able to answer: During the scene at Upson Downs, Vera referred to Mrs. Upson as "Mrs. Updike," with an emphasis on the latter syllable. It got a laugh. Is that in the original libretto? |
