Yeah, a combination of money and time when I was growing up, although I was surrounded by relatives who loved Broadway shows, including both grandmothers, several aunts, and my mother. I was the oldest in a large working class family in the Chicago suburbs. My parents would drive into Chicago to see the major tours of shows like The Music Man; Fiorello!; Hello, Dolly!; Funny Girl; Mame; and others. They also saw a lot of local productions in the suburbs and even Milwaukee but I was the babysitter so I could never go with them. In the late 60's an older lady from our church, who was a good friend of my parents, enjoyed going to the theatre, but was afraid to drive alone into downtown Chicago at night. My dad told her that I would be willing to go with her if she would pay for my ticket. So I began driving her into the city to see shows. I remember seeing touring productions of Wait a Minim; Black Comedy; A Moon for the Misbegotten; Hallelujah, Baby!; and possibly others. At some point I lost interest in theatre for reasons I don't exactly remember. BTW, I thought I was straight until around 1980, and none of my girlfriends was ever interested in theatre. My eventual partner, whom I met in 1989, was a big theatre fan so we started seeing productions like Les Miserables; Cats; Phantom of the Opera; A Chorus Line; The Secret Garden; Man of La Mancha; and others. We finally decided to go to New York in 1993. |
