I'm blown away by this clip of ''Chicago'' in South Korea, which stars Choi Jae-Rim as Billy Flynn. He's got a big rich voice, but he especially leaves me speechless in the sections where he's supposed to be a ventriloquist manipulating Roxie as a dummy. He's actually doing the vocal trickery. This number, which might be my favorite in the show, is prefaced by a chorus member who says: ''Notice how his lips never move ... almost.'' I've seen ''Chicago'' many times. Usually the actor playing Billy affects a different voice as if he's Roxie, but have others actually done the ventriloquism? I couldn't find footage of Jerry Orbach, the original Billy, in ''We Both Reached for the Gun,'' but I found a clip of James Naughton doing this number on the Rosie O'Donnell show (1996), and you DO see his lips move. Ditto for Richard Gere in the Oscar-winning movie of ''Chicago'' (2002). |
