The line between ex-monk Roy Cockrum and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom os not as strange as you might think. Both Cockrum and Charles Busch were Theatre majors at Northwestern during the mid-seventies. I was there in another department and missed my chance to see Busch's Sister Act, his play about a set of transvestite Siamese twins (my loss); I did see Cockrum as an excellent Big Daddy in the student-produced Arts Alliance production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He was one of the main character actors in the department during that period (with Kristine Nielsen the premiere character actress-they may have done shows together, for all I remember). There were some wonderful student actors/directors/playwrights on that campus then--as there always have been and continue to be now. |
