Much of Shrike(Ryan)'s heavy-handed dialogue in the film is taken from Teichmann's play Miss Lonelyhearts. West's novella was better served by an excellent American Playhouse version in 1983, which starred Eric Roberts, Arthur Hill and Concetta Ferrell. It barely runs an hour and isn't saddled with an ill-fitting happy ending. I would love to see it again.
