My reaction exactly. I'm a lifelong fan, dating to her first one person show produced by Mike Nichols. But I don't think the role at this juncture is a perfect fit. One of the great hallmarks of the Loudon Hannigan, still the gold standard, was her manic presentation, a nervous energy. Loudon was a physical comedian, and her agile way - she was graceful in the part, as odd as that sounds - contributed to her characterization. I'm not sure the more sedentary 65-ish Goldberg persona folds into the part, but perhaps. (If this had been, say, Catherine O'Hara, it might've been intriguing to me.) I'm curious if Goldberg's fan base is eager to see her in a role played by so many others. I'd love to see her in something new. |
