I saw Glynis Johns as Madame Armfeldt, opposite a miscast Lois Nettleton as Desiree, in a 1991 Los Angeles production. Johns submerged Madame A's supercilious wit for a melancholy, autumnal quality. She seemed to be staring death in the face. The production suffered from a bizarre set design that placed the action in an interior with a splash of blue, representing the sky, on the upstage wall. |
