I think that Prince with his track record (even during his flop period) would have had a say that some other directors would not have had. And in 1981 it wasn't yet altogether clear that he wouldn't be back as a producer as well as a director. Although he wasn't one of the producers of On the Twentieth Century and Sweeney Todd, he was one of the Merrily producers.
