| NYCO basically lost its perch in Lincoln Center when a new director was announced and plans for a new season went seriously awry with miscalculations and budget and other financial problems. The company's name was apparently bought by someone who used to run the DiCapo Opera (a now defunct company who at one point -- and I don't know if it was cleared up with AGMA union intervention -- owed money to its singers). They've had some short seasons over at the Jazz venue by Columbus Circle, but otherwise, the company isn't really a company, it seems -- just a job-in for some performers on an occasional gig. What a shame for a company that had full seasons, gave many yearly months of employment to its chorus, orchestra, and tech and administrative staff and gave rise to the likes of Beverly Sills, Norman Treigle, Jerry Hadley, Samuel Ramey and Julius Rudel, among others. | |
