I get what you mean, and I experience it that was more often than not. But I find that usually after a certain amount of time, which could be 1 year or 10 years, enough of the play has faded from my mind for there to be a reset and opportunity to rediscover it anew a 2nd time (in the same production with a new cast, or a new production) as if I'd not seen it before but maybe read a wiki summary and had a handful of impactful moments burned in my mind or heart.
That being said, I did see both original casts of The Goat (I preferred Bill Pullman to Bill Irwin, and I preferred Sally Field to Mercedes Ruehl). I rarely see a straight-play more than once in any given production unless I've worked on it... which is due to a combo of financial limitations, time limitations, and what you said ... in fact the only other play production I think I saw twice was Cromer's Our Town (with the original cast with Cromer in it, and then later in the run with Michael Shannon). |
