The last time I saw James Earl Jones on stage was in the original B'way production of FENCES. I don't know if this was written into the play, but at one point, when he was alone on stage with Mary Alice, at a very dramatic moment, he seemed to be overcome with emotion and he faltered and the play came to a stop. As I recall, he paused for a few seconds, gathered himself, and put the play right back on track. Whether it was real or scripted, it was enormously moving. |
