| If you aren't super "current" on pop culture I think that's fine. There are a few great winks at past musicals from longer ago. A lot of the pop culture references feel strangely dated and specific to the mid-2010s. Or maybe there are new ones from the post-TikTok era that just blew past me. Even the way the show mentions Truvada feels a tiny bit stale since the dawning of the age of "prep + doxypep" (this particular dissonance I mostly felt because there's literally a "prep + doxypep" ad on the back of the program!) Also for anyone who saw it: anyone know what was up with the costume choice during the, uh, mirror number? I feel so sure that choosing the blue skirt (and I think pigtails?) was a reference to something when a red dress would have been the obvious choice, but I have no clue what it was. Maybe RPDR? Even though I didn't feel like the target audience, I'm glad I saw BGJ. I hope they make it even stronger in the coming performances. |
