JAY supposedly recorded a complete Music Man long ago that may one day be released, but I wonder if they did record everything or if there is stuff that would still need to be recorded to make it complete. It stars Brian Cox as Harold Hill. He had played the role onstage in 1995 at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in London. A 12-track excerpts version of most of the major songs was issued in the Orbis Musicals Collection and I think it was also issued much later as a download from JAY. I think it's not good. At all. Cox makes a whopping big error in "Trouble" that I can't believe no one noticed, but that's the least of the problems.

The show was one of the many that received BBC radio productions. That one has the complete "Marian the Librarian" dance music, or at least I think it's complete there, but unfortunately the BBC producer of those broadcasts did what he so often did, which was to add dialogue over the music, dialogue that's not in the show and was added because I guess they thought people would be bored just listening to dance music or that listeners needed some explanation of what was going on. It's maddening. And it's also really too bad because the production was pretty reasonably cast, with Jim Dale as Harold, and Claire Moore as Marian.
