My issues with it had nothing to do with Macbeth, or how much it did or didn't stick that. I had been a fan of the movie it's based on actually (which is quite a bit better than the musical, if I recall)... but not enough to come into it with much expectation or specific memory of much for the musical to be up against (the way perhaps a Grey Gardens, Heathers or Mean Girls would have been)... the musical was free to sink or swim on its own terms, and boy did it sink. I think it's possible I'm just not a fan of the writing of Adam Gwon, who I know is very talented but seems to not write musical scores/songs I respond to -- also did not like Ordinary Days), and I'm not sure I know any of the other plays of Michael Mitnick, but if my memory serves, he managed to take an original, funny, engaging screenplay and make a much worse musical book. But it wasn't just the writing, I hated the direction and frankly the cast too. Everyone involved has done better work. But I would genuinely be interested in giving the show another shot. | |
