It was reported while she appeared on Broadway in Lettice and Lovage that she was unhappy with her treatment by the Shuberts. She wanted to do the show at the Plymouth, not the Barrymore. She had appeared at the Barrymore and didn't like playing there, but the Shuberts gave it to The Heidi Chronicles. (I don't blame her for preferring the Plymouth to the Barrymore.) She was willing to go on the road with Lettice and Lovage, but the Shuberts wanted to book it in theatres she felt were too big. The Shuberts, of course, said that they had done everything they could to make her happy and had treated her as a star of her magnitude deserved, but she felt they treated her as an employee. It may have soured her on appearing again in New York.
