Calling the character Mama Rose, by the way—instead of Madam Rose, or worse yet Madame Rose—is a hill I will die on if it comes to that, which in my circles it someday might.
The problem here is that in the show, she is actually literally referred to as Madam Rose (as in "...and her Toreadorables.") And she's called "Momma" by her daughters. But she's never called Mama (as opposed to Momma), and never Momma Rose, or worse yet Mama Rose. You can call her what you like, I suppose, but my question would be, "where is that in the text??" And I'll die on THAT hill. :-)
Thank you for your mention of having seen Julia Mattison and Noel Carey some years back. They were also both students of mine in the musical theatre program at Emerson. I'm really proud of them and really excited for the show. |
