That bravura first scene, really four scenes, in which Smith had to deliver a quartet of different takes on the same rote material, with both significant alterations in characterizing a dullish, history-free house and subtle, nuanced internal shifts in minutiae - is one of the most bravura sequences in contemporary theater. I have the script, and when you read the precision in Shaffer's text, you can't help but recall the way Smith launched the evening. The synergy of actor and role was total. I remember my feeling: no one else could ever come close. My memory could be shaky, but if I recall: no one wanted to replace her in order to keep the show running. An impossible task (I believe everyone from Dana Ivy to major Hollywood stars were considered or approached.)

A national company, led by Julie Harris and Roberta Maxwell, went out in '92'93. Anyone see it? I suspect Harris was inspired.
