I saw that workshop, and I went in extremely skeptical, as OUR TOWN, which I love, is a play that eschews all artifice, and I thought that adding music would only unnecessarily complicate it. I left thinking that they indeed did have a good show on their hands, though I thought it needed at least one further rewrite. I did not, alas, see it on stage in Chicago. The Jones and Schmidt score was very good, and it's a shame that the Wilder estate won't let anyone see their version. I will never forget Liz Callaway as Emily singing "Goodbye, World." |
