Howard Miller takes a look at The Hills of California at the Broadhurst Theatre:

Playwright Jez Butterworth has set a high bar for himself as a writer, with vastly varied works that include the bombastic Jerusalem, the fanciful The River, and the great crowd-pleaser The Ferryman. The latter, a sprawling take on "The Troubles" of Northern Ireland, wowed critics and audiences alike and garnered four Tony Awards in 2019: one for Best Play, another for director Sam Mendes, and two more that went to Rob Howell for his set and costume design. Now the team is back and giving their all to The Hills of California, a melodramatic time-shifting family play that opened tonight at the Broadhurst Theatre.
