On Broadway, I completely agree with you. As a directing project in college, why not? On Thursday I'm seeing a directing project at Columbia - it's Kern's Sally with an apparently entirely new book. Probably going to be terrible, but who cares? There's a .01% chance it'll be brilliant, and if it's not, Sally still exists.
I think part of the fun of shows we know and love going into the public domain is that we'll get to see people tear them apart, rewrite them, etc. On Broadway, in professional theater, I'm not thrilled about that. In college, it feels exciting. I wish I had done stuff like that when I was a student in college (of course, when I was in college, only shows before 1912 were in the public domain.) |
