For as long as I have been paying attention to this kind of thing, the cut-off date for the season has been a Thursday (usually the last Thursday in April), and then the nominations have been announced the following Tuesday. (I mean, I'm sure this wasn't always the case - but it has been for many years now.) Now, the cut-off date is a Sunday (so there are now three more potential opening dates past what would normally happen), with the nominations that subsequent Thursday (so two days later than normal).

I'm guessing this is news to many, since so far, no one has picked an opening date past 4/24 (which would have - based on recent years - been the cut-off date.) Usually shows are quick to snag that "last slot." I actually wouldn't be surprised if one or several of those late-breaking shows changes their closing dates now, or else, the ones soon to announce will snag them.

I'm also guessing this is in response to the insane rush last season, which saw several shows having to share the same opening date.
