The East West Players have announced the cast for PACIFIC OVERTURES (November 7-December 1), headed by Jon Jon Briones as the Reciter and Gedde Watanabe as the Old Man and the Shogun’s Mother. Watanabe originated the role of the Boy (“Someone In a Tree”) in PO nearly a half century ago; now he’s playing the Old Man, the older version of the Boy in the same song. This will be my fourth PACIFIC OVERTURES at EWP: the 1978 production, directed and starring Mako (I was in the front row,,and he was damn near close enough to touch); the return of that production in 1979 (I brought my fiancé); the 1998 production, directed by Tim Deng, who is returning to direct the new one (I brought our three kids, all Sondheads); and now this. I have had our tickets for weeks, and advise any SoCal Chatterati to move fast. Daughter Rachel, who was a double major in history and Japanese, will be down for Thanksgiving and has already changed work schedules to stay longer to see it. We have two out of town friends visiting, too—a writer and her husband from Portland. She’s a lifelong fan, and has never managed to see a production. Laura in sizzling LA |
