Also, in the Lucy and Ricky Ricardo sketch, was Smart trying to channel Tallulah Bankhead? In an early 50's episode Lucy Fakes Illness, Lucille Ball actually did a great imitation of Bankhead. It was a little shocking in the sketch that Smart (as Lucy) opined that Ricky was gay because of his colorful ties and later in the sketch Marcello Hernandez (as Ricky) suggested that Lucille Ball named names to HUAC as being communists. Toward the end of the program, Smart seemed to be channeling Grace Zabriskie as Susan Ross' mother in Seinfeld. If that was her intent, I thought she was devastatingly accurate. BTW Jean Smart has 2 Broadway credits and has had a notable career in theatre. |
