Titanic is another example of that. Lots of people made fun of the show at first - "we know how it ends" etc. (Though I don't remember hearing people say that about the film that came out around the same time. Hmm.) But what makes the show compelling is how it takes us through the story, not just what the ending is.
I'd also offer the depository scene in Assassins. We know how it will end. But getting there is quite an emotional journey, from the genius imagination of John Weidman. After all these years that scene still makes me gasp and laugh and cry, and believe me, I know every line of it, let alone the ending of it. That's powerful theatre. We know that Oswald will make that devastating shot - that's the historical truth of the scene (at least as we've mostly come to accept it lol). But the journey of the scene is what counts. |
