I remember someone here saying the last time this contentious issue arose was that when they dim the marquees, it creates crowd control situations because presumably a whole whack of people show up in addition to the throngs on their way into that night's shows. And does that mean that the theatre owners have to pay for more security? I'd love to see some hard numbers- if they exist- about how many people turn up for the dimming itself who don't have show tickets. I definitely think Gavin Creel deserves the honour because he packed a f*** of a lot into a 20+ year career and won not only a Tony but also the hearts of everyone who ever met him. Of course Brian Bedford and Tammy Grimes and Fritz Weaver deserved it even more- IMO- but because they aged and because their careers gradually diminished as they entered their 70's and 80's, their passings were anticipated and less of a shock to the system. Of course I think it precisely THESE type of Broadway legends who SHOULD be honoured and remembered. As for Maggie Smith, I can understand that her Broadway credits were limited and ended 35 years ago. Much as I worshipped her, I wouldn't argue she was an essential honouree of the marquee dimming, but definitely worthy of dimming on Shaftsbury Avenue and the South Bank. |
