I just couldn't figure out how someone wrote such insanely clever lyrics, then (as far as I know) hadn't written anything even half as clever since. I just wondered what had inspired all that early brilliance. I don't remember who, but someone suggested a few things: - That Cy Coleman and Larry Gelbart were already writing at such a high level that Mr. Zippel simply had to rise to meet their cleverness - That the genre & story permitted this much double-entendre, being about a writer, after all - That perhaps Gelbart had assisted with the lyrics and was uncredited Whatever it was, I'm comfortable saying that Mr. Zippel's lyrics for THE GOODBYE GIRL and Disney's "Hercules" really don't match the brilliance of CITY OF ANGELS. That said, there are some very clever lines in "Zero to Hero": From appearance fees and royalties Our Herc had cash to burn Now nouveau riche and famous He could tell you what the Grecians earn! (Some sources type it as 'urn,' naturally... but the double meaning is legit.) - GMB |
