| Interesting points. Personally, the author sequence in "Now" has never bothered me, because I don't think we need to catch every single word to get what Fredrik is after here. It does show that he's well read, of course, and that most likely, Anne is not - which gives us another bit of the overall mismatch between them. But really it's all about the adult nature in those author's works. "Yes, that much seems clear." :-) Though this also makes me think of Phyllis' references in "Could I Leave You" - particularly "the Braques and Chagalles and all that" - which relates back to her line about having walked her feet off in the Met Museum as a young woman only to (falsely) impress Ben with her cultural knowledge. But here, unlike Fredrik, who would love to introduce Anne to some more adult lit, Phyllis seems to be showing her disdain for all the art she learned about - for what?? It reveals a lot about her, IMO. |
