I loved this 1999 musical salute to ''The Civil War'' and went multiple times! Jack Murphy and Frank Wildhorn wrote beautiful country-pop songs of Americana that captured that era. The exciting cast sang them to a fare-thee-well, and it's one of the most stirring scores I've ever heard: with ''I'll Never Pass This Way Again,'' ''Last Waltz for Dixie'' and ''The Glory.'' The show's most poignant and plaintive ballad might been ''Sarah.'' It was inspired by Officer Sullivan Ballou's moving and eloquent letter to his wife, written a week before he was mortally wounded at the First Battle of Bull Run. Ken Burns' ''Civil War'' PBS series featured this missive, and Murphy and Wildhorn transformed it into a musical gem. And I still often play many songs from the CD. Though there's no Broadway cast album, there is a ''Civil War'' studio CD featuring many country stars, plus Betty Buckley, Linda Eder and Patti LaBelle. |
