I loved it. And had zero difficulty with the accents all night. Neither did my friend. Neither of us is from the North of England. As for the play itself, if you found The Ferryman didn't have much action, then I doubt you'll enjoy The Hills of California, which is more character driven. It's almost a memory play. But the characters are beautifully drawn by a fantastic cast of British actors -- especially the four leading ladies -- and Mendes' direction is excellent. It's also enormously satisfying to see a non-musical play done on a big, Broadway-scale, but without any TV or film stars or, frankly, any central gimmick. |
