While it sounds like there were a lot of factors in his decision, I find this "one strike and yer out" philosophy to be unnerving. Did he have a history of abusive behaviour? This demand for a conflict- and hurt feelings-free world just seems so unrealistic to me. Keeping a fringe theatre like the York afloat seems to me a Herculean task even in normal times but since COVID and the push for diversity emerged in the wake of George Floyd's death, the difficulty level has skyrocketed. I worry for a scrappy little organization like the York and hope that they manage to replace him with someone as dedicated.
