I'm glad you responded at length, both here and in a direct reply to the article itself. When WWriter posted the link, I hesitated to click on it. Your reply piqued my curiosity, and I read it. I agree with most everything you write. I would add more to it, including mentioning what's wrong with the author's weird statement that "In the subsequent scene, three days later, Curly is in jail awaiting a form of prairie justice that may or may not honor his plea of self-defense." It's quite the opposite, as the play makes clear. If it were up to the locals, Curly would not be in jail. What he is awaiting is not prairie justice, but federal justice. They are waiting for the federal marshals, and they are not happy about it (Eller least of all). There's more I'd like to say about the article, but I haven't had the time to type it out. I wanted to reply at least a little before this discussion leaves the first page here. One thing I did want to mention in response to something you wrote: The title song was always in the show in performance. It was written early in rehearsals. It was in the show at the first performance in New Haven. It wasn't added in Boston. In fact, no songs were added out of town. What happened to the title song in Boston was that the big choral arrangement was added, which greatly transformed the number, and the tap dance that George Church did during it was cut. Before this, the number seems to have been somewhat staidly presented, with the chorus singing but in unison rather than harmony. |
