BLACK THEATRE COALITION

ANNOUNCES

PARTNERSHIP WITH

CODY RENARD RICHARD SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN!

New York, NY (October 15, 2024) – Black Theatre Coalition (BTC) announces partnership with Cody Renard Richard Scholarship to support emerging leadership in the broader theater community.

Beginning on September 8, 2020, the Broadway Advocacy Coalition ("BAC") established a scholarship program alongside Cody Renard Richard for college, and graduate school students of color pursuing degrees in any offstage theatrical related field.

Over the last four years, the program has accepted 45 students and awarded $340,000 amongst them. Much like previous years, the fifth cycle of The CRR Scholarship Program will award 10 recipients a financial grant and will offer the cohort various online work sessions connected to leadership, community building, and mentorship. This cycle will conclude with an all-expenses paid trip to New York City to meet with mentors, attend panels with leading industry professionals and interact with the Broadway scene in person.

Cody Renard Richard states, "We are thrilled to announce that going forward, The Cody Renard Richard Scholarship Program (CRR Scholarship) will be under the stewardship of the Black Theatre Coalition (BTC). BTC embodies the principles and possesses the capability to expand on the achievements made through BAC and propel CRR Scholarship into its next stage of development."

The recipients for this scholarship are Black, Latin, Asian or Indigenous American citizen students in financial need studying non-performance related theater studies, particularly with a focus in stage management, directing, writing, designing, producing, or other administrative fields.

Applications are now open through Sunday November 24th at 11:59pm EST. Applicants will be selected and informed by January 2025. Eligible applicants will need to submit a one-minute video essay describing why they are the ideal candidate for the program, along with their current transcript and two letters of recommendation. https://www.crrscholarship.com

BTC continues to provide avenues for diverse professionals by placing them in various roles across the entertainment industry. BTC is breaking through the ‘Illusion of Inclusion' to reshape the working ecosystem by providing paid opportunities that foster meaningful connections and excellence.

ABOUT BLACK THEATRE COALITION

Black Theatre Coalition was founded by T. Oliver Reid and Warren Adams during the Summer of 2019. They identified the disparity between the growing inclusivity onstage, versus the almost non-existence of Black professionals off stage. They invited their colleague, Reggie Van Lee, to join them as Co-Founder in their march towards dismantling the systemically racist and biased ideology in the theatrical job space. Black Theatre Coalition officially filed as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in June of 2020.

Black Theatre Coalition's mission is to remove the "illusion of inclusion" in the American Theatre. By building a sustainable ethical roadmap that will increase employment opportunities for black theatre professionals. Our vision is to reshape the working ecosystem for those who have been marginalized by systemically racist and biased ideology.
