I would be hard put to decide whether Long Day's Journey or Our Town is the greatest. I love them both. I think my favorite, however, may be Landscape of the Body, a play that, admittedly, seems to resist fully working in performance. But I think that's also true of The Skin of Our Teeth, which I also love. It's been a long time since I watched it, but my memory is that the Old Glove production directed by Jack O'Brien is a mixed bag. I prefer the 1955 television production with Mary Martin, Helen Hayes, George Abbott, Florence Reed and Don Murray, based on the 1955 stage revival with them. But George Abbott is just OK, kind of like an understudy. But I think George is a tough part. |
