If you were NOT misunderstanding it, I would be very disappointed. :-)
I actually think there are a wide variety of rules, not just for the Tonys, that exist as they do because no one bothers to sit down and contemplate how they work in the current day. We have a definition of Broadway + Beaumont that just annoys people, and we also have 6 non-profit houses (that annoy a different group of people). There is still a Broadway Box concept that is observed in the breach, what I mentioned in the other post about (particularly) Brooklyn and the notion that all top tier New York theatre originates in Manhattan. We could both go on and on, but no one does anything about it (except, of course, complain when it suits them). I am not really advocating for anything, but it's just on my mind now.
I would be interested in seeing Puntila. Can we get the rights? :-) I think it might be difficult to say it is a classic or a part of anyone's popular repertoire. |
