My middle-aged mind, riddled as it is with toxic horrible ageism, just cannot be convinced that the producers of this surely expensive musical believe that an 87 year old who's been attached to this script and story for 40 years is the best person to do the difficult job of writing a good book for this new musical of it that also claims it will be re-thought to speak to today's audience. But maybe they do.

One thing that I don't think has been considered yet - perhaps she put her foot down about this and it was either her project or not happening? That's certainly a possibility. I'm not meaning to cast aspersions on her or anyone else, but being too close to your own material to allow for collaboration is certainly a thing. And if something like that is part of the deal, perhaps the producers felt it was better to have her show than no show at all. Who knows?
