According to Howard is an unconventional love story and a reminder that money can never buy (or substitute for) what love can offer. It's about winning—but at what cost? It's about decisions, choices, ideas, and incredible intuition. Through a score reminiscent of the golden age of Broadway, According to Howard delves into the unique life and times of one of the most fascinating individuals of the 20th Century, a human being who shaped the world of aviation, film, business, and Hollywood gossip: Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. The cast for According to Howard is Cassie Austin (A Sign of the Times at The York), Christine DiGianollardo (A Prairie Home Companion), Michael Dikegoros (Tootsie at Ogunquit Playhouse), David Elder (42nd Street), Beth Glover (Grey Gardens – TheatreWorks), Michelle Beth Herman (Les Misérables), Michael Hurst (The Hours), Mya Ison (Mary Gets Hers), James Judy (Monte Cristo at The York), Gina Milo (Subways Are for Sleeping at The York), Jill Paice (Curtains), William Ryall (Wicked), Ryan Silverman (A Sign of the Times at The York), and Josh Tower (Hamilton). The Assistant Director is Michael Dikegoros and Heather Klein is Production Stage Manager. Casting by Jason Styres, The Casting Collaborative . Bios James Scully (Co-Book/Music) was introduced to his first piano teacher at age six. His musical education was informal, although he did study composition, harmony and counterpoint. He also studied voice at the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music outside of Philadelphia. Mr. Scully holds an undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania and has been in the field of real estate for most of his life. Mr. Scully also served as an active duty officer in the US Navy for two years. A pilot himself, and having a lifetime fascination with airplanes, it was natural that Howard Hughes be the subject of a musical he wanted to write. Under the previous title Flight, the musical, now entitled According to Howard, received the prestigious Stanley Drama Award from Wagner College and the Appalachian Playwright's Award in Asheville, NC. Chad Gorn (Co-Lyrics) has been putting words to music and music to words for as long as he can remember. Recent projects include Saving Wonderland (book, music, lyrics), which can be found on audio streaming services on the podcast Braving the Bard and Call Me Velma (book, music, lyrics), the true(ish) story of Belva Gaertner, the inspiration behind Chicago's Velma Kelly. His short musical Stone Brew was featured at the Neighborhood House Play Festival in Philadelphia, and his short play Superbloom was presented at the Broadway Bods Playfest. He would like to thank his wife Carrie for her love and support. Jennifer Paulson-Lee (Co-Book/Direction/Choreography) is Co-author of the revised version of Wonderland(Wildhorn/Murphy), available for license via MTI beginning Fall 2024 following a successful run at Tuacahn Center for the Arts, Utah. Lincoln Center: The Scarlet Pimpernel, Annie Get Your Gun, and The Four Seasons. Opera: Susannah, HMS Pinafore, The Consul. Back Home: The War Brides Musical (music by Christopher Berg, book by Ron Sproat), Dinner at Eight (music by Ben Schaechter, book by Julie Gilbert, based on the play by Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman), and earlier versions of According to Howard (also librettist music by James Scully) all had readings at The York Theatre. He was a longtime member of the steering committee of the BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop and the Artistic Director of the Musical Mondays Theatre Lab. The York Theatre Company "Where Musicals Come to Life," is the only theatre in New York City—and one of very few in the world—dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals and preserving notable shows from the past. For over five decades, York's intimate, imaginative style of producing both original and classic musicals has resulted in critical acclaim and recognition from artists and audiences alike. Since 1997, The York has focused on new musicals in its Mainstage Series—most of them world, American, or New York premieres—by some of the field's most esteemed creators and has also helped launch the careers of many talented new writers. Over 45 cast recordings from York Theatre Company productions are now available, including its acclaimed revival of Closer Than Ever (2013 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Revival). Commercial transfers of such York premieres as The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), Souvenir (Tony Award Nomination for actress Judy Kaye), and Jolson & Company, and revivals of Pacific Overtures and Sweeney Todd (four Tony Nominations including Best Revival) have all showcased the importance of The York and its programs. Recent York productions have included A Sign of the Times (New World Stages), The Jerusalem Syndrome, Vanities—The Musical, Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust Road, Penelope: or How the Odyssey Was Really Written, Cheek to Cheek: Irving Berlin in Hollywood, A Taste of Things to Come, Marry Harry, and Rothschild & Sons. The critically acclaimed musical Yank! received its Off-Broadway debut at The York, and subsequently to rave reviews in London—as did York's Rothschild & Sons. The hit musical Cagney received its York premiere in 2015, transferring to the Westside Theatre for over 15 months. In 2017, Desperate Measures received a total of 15 award nominations (and three wins) that included Best Musical from the Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Off-Broadway Alliance and subsequently transferred across town to New World Stages. The York is the recipient of a special Drama Desk Award for "Developing and Producing New Musicals," a special Outer Critics Circle Award for "50 Years of Producing New and Classic Musicals." Due to a flood in their home of 30 years at Saint Peter's Church in January 2021, The York is currently producing at The Theatre at St. Jean's at 76th Street and Lexington Avenue. www.yorktheatre.org Instagram: @yorktheatre Twitter: @yorktheatrenyc www.facebook.com/yorktheatrecompany/ www.youtube.com/user/yorktheatre |
