It was thrilling. Of course, I've been in love with her since seeing her on Carol Burnett, so keep that in mind! She was in great voice and spirit. And who needs a fictional Dorian Gray when you've got a living example. The night was dominated by Sondheim: Old Friends, No One is Alone, In Buddy's Eyes, Losing My Mind, Goodbye for Now, Johanna, With So Little to be Sure Of, Children Will Listen, Send in the Clowns, Being Alive, Move On, Anyone Can Whistle. Also You Gotta Get a Gimmick with Heather Lee and Julie Halston (fulfilling one of my wish-casting dreams for the new revival-the "entertainers" all sung by prior Mama Roses). Additional songs: Nothing Like a Dame, Fever (sung atop the piano-you know), Mr Snow, It Might as Well be Spring, So Long Dearie, Before the Parade Passes By. I think that's it. It's hard to pick a favorite moment, though No One is Alone and Children will Listen are two of my favorite Sondheim songs. Great, enthusiastic audience, who kept quiet until the end of each song and no prolonged whistling or whoo-hooing. I'm happy to have sprung for good seats for Old Friends, just so I can see her again in the spring. |
