| I enjoyed it too, and thought that groaner period jokes (eg: lots of cheese and dairy puns) were delightful. I agree that it's way too long and think it probably needs to be cut by 45 minutes. Make it 2 hours and a bit, including intermission. I was getting restless toward the end. Some of Christopher Fitzgerald's "in one" comedy bits seemed disconnected to the whole and a little of that goes a long way. I'm guessing those exist because they facilitated scene and costume changes by the leads originally. This seemed of a piece with OF THEE I SING and very inspired by G&S in style. It seemed more polished than their ANYONE CAN WHISTLE outing, the last MasterVoices presentation I saw at Carnegie Hall. It's interesting to me that these concerts are produced by a choral organization, but seem to increasingly feature jobbed in leading players with the chorus literally hanging out in the back. They sounded great, but there weren't even any opportunities here for soloists from the ensemble to get a moment in. Perhaps their non-Broadway concerts provide more opportunities to put the choral singers front and center. |
