I was in London shortly before NEXT TO NORMAL closed, and felt very lucky to see Caissie Levy give a fantastic, completely believable performance as Diana. If ever there's a role where a performer might be tempted to do too much it's this one; she kept a tight pressure cooker lid on all of Diana's inner drama, which made for a moving, compelling performance.

I've always been able to sit back and relax when hearing Ms. Levy's sing.

And it's not just because of her incredibly good pitch, her warm, earthy timbre, or her lovely tone color, but because she's smart about her vocal placement. It's true that she's got a wonderfully warm, earthy belt (a rare thing in the current era of bright, ping-y mixy belts), but even when she places very high notes in her real chest register, I never fear that she's being unhealthy or unwise. If her placement on a few notes in this one performance rubs you the wrong way, trust that she's a versatile enough vocalist that she might not sing it the same way next time.

Because most importantly, I really do see Ms. Levy prioritize her acting moments first, making sure that the vocal choices stem from the intention -- something that she seems to have grown into more and more since I first saw her in GHOST.

In this RAGTIME video, I can't help but notice that she finds fully THREE acting moments on the last note alone. This feels grounded and honest to me, and that's what matters most. I can't wait to see the show.
