I feel badly for all performers who have to suffer the indignities of having previews, dress rehearsals and-God help us- first reads being videotaped and disseminated for promotional purposes. It's always felt very unfair and cruel.

But I can't deny that I was not won over by the manner of Ms Levy's singing in that clip. It felt like an intentional choice that I took to indicate "agency" and "status" that eschewed the incredible warmth that Martin Mazzie conveyed. What discussions she and the director and MD had are not conversations that I was privy to so I'm just trying to make sense of it.

Joshua Henry and the actor playing Sarah seemed similarly strident but the effect was more pleasing to the ear. Perhaps they are trying to tone down the romantic stentorian delivery of the original cast which did sometimes tilt towards overly noble.
