“ Unfortunately for the show, many may not at the moment have much of an appetite for what is arguably the valorization of a false prophet.”

It’s been a long while since a new musical opened in Broadway that I had less than zero desire to see. Their whole bit peaked, if you ask me, with the TV movie 30 years ago starring Bernadette Peters and Kevin Spacey as the Bakkers. (Worth checking out if you can find it.)
And yes, I thought the movie a few years back was massively overrated and Jessica Chastain, who I generally like, one of the more baffling Oscar wins of my long long life.
So I had little interest in seeing the story again, let alone seeing it musicalized.

And that was BEFORE this week.

Given the timing of the opening and what you write above (“the valorization of a false prophet”) and the word of mouth (poisonous almost across the board, aside from your post here, as Ann says) you literally couldn’t pay ME to go see this one.

As Delvino said, “who is considered the target audience?”
Indeed.
And that would be the question right now even if the show were a thousand times better than it sounds like it is.
