Spare as it is, this rendition of RAGTIME is entirely, thrillingly legible. The distillation foregrounds the book and, of course, the score, both of which are superb. In the shadow of this week’s events, the show was especially moving, packed as it is with great, at times anthemic, feeling. And the vocal performances were, to a person, unparalleled. RAGTIME seems never to have quite found its place amidst the greatest of American musicals. Maybe it’s time to make room. Last night the show played like a stirring elegy on departed promise; the sorrow outpaced the hope. But there was exquisite defiance, too. RAGTIME still “sings the (American) body electric.” | |
