"We Can Never Go Back to Before" this afternoon

Much has been written about the multiple standing ovations in the context of this Encores! Ragtime. "Wheels of a Dream" stops the show, cold. But with Levy’s carefully considered and ultimately searing “Back to Before” - an 11 o'clock spot became an 11th hour meta declaration. An introspective rumination, the song often takes on colors of defiance. I've heard it beautifully simple and unadorned, and self-indulgent, overthought. Today, a personal epiphany evolved into an explosive entreaty. Spontaneous cheering followed, not only to acknowledge and reward the performance, but to serve what became an occasion; it felt in every way participatory. It was about Mother, Levy - but also everyone in City Center. Had Levy not finally turned and moved from down center, the moment might've peaked a third time. We're all tired of Broadway's perfunctory standing O experience. Today's had nothing to do with that overused practice. I've never felt so unexpectedly included in a moment.
