Howard Miller takes a look at A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical at Studio 54:

"When You're Smiling," a song written just ahead of the Great Depression, was not conceived by its composers with Louis Armstrong in mind. Yet while it is just one song among 30 that are performed in whole or in part in A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical, the hodgepodge of a bio-musical opening tonight at Studio 54, it conveys a not-always-wonderful world of meaning in the story of how the great Black American trumpet player and singer became and is still considered to be a national treasure by even the most casual listener of jazz.
