Her Livia is one of the greatest villainesses ever!

Saw Sian Phillips my first night in London many years ago opposite Denis Lawson in "Pal Joey". Still had jet lag, but wanted to go the the theatre. Fine production -- no reason the show can't work today without all these alterations many productions afterwards keep doing that have utterly failed it by tinkering with a perfectly good book. Sian Phillips looked elegant and was the height of sophistication on stage. Her singing voice was able to put over the songs, and she made "Bewitched" quite sexy and naughty. Lawson was a fine Joey, a good actor who was compact and sexy, though more of a mover than a true dancer. But the show worked, and I was thrilled to see Livia on stage -- as Mrs. Simpson, of course!
